MovieBox v4.0.03 arrived this week and we have been using it every evening on three different devices. It is not a dramatic redesign, but it fixes several small annoyances from the last release and adds one feature that people with fast connections have wanted for a long time.
The main changes
- Search results now appear as you type, without pressing enter
- A new 4K option shows up when your connection is faster than 25 Mbps
- Subtitles no longer drift after skipping forward or backward
- A “Trending today” row at the top of the home screen
- Noticeably lower memory use on phones with 3 GB of RAM
How it performed in our tests
On the Samsung test phone the app opened about a second faster than v4.0.01, and search felt instant. On the older Tecno phone the difference was bigger: the previous version sometimes closed itself after long sessions, and that did not happen once with v4.0.03. On the Fire TV Stick everything worked as before, and the new 4K option appeared on our fibre connection.
Version history
| Version | Size | Released |
|---|---|---|
| v4.0.03 | 63.5 MB | This week |
| v4.0.01 | 62.6 MB | 5 weeks ago |
| v3.2.10 | 58.9 MB | 3 months ago |
Should you update?
Yes. The subtitle fix alone makes it worth it, and owners of older phones will appreciate the lower memory use. Install the new APK over the old one: your downloads, history and settings stay where they are. If anything goes wrong, the previous versions remain available on our download page.
Known issues
A few readers report that the new 4K option does not appear on some TV boxes, even on fast connections. This usually means the box cannot decode 4K video in hardware, so the app hides the option on purpose. Everything else, including downloads and subtitles, works normally on those devices.
