A phone screen is fine for a quick episode, but a new film deserves the living-room TV. MovieBox runs on every Fire TV Stick we have tested and on most Android TV boxes, and its large tiles are easy to move through with a remote. This guide shows the two methods we use at home, plus the settings that make playback smooth on cheaper hardware.
What you need
- A Fire TV Stick (any generation) or an Android TV box running Android 7 or newer
- At least 200 MB of free storage
- A Wi-Fi connection of 5 Mbps or faster
- The address of our download page
Method 1: the Downloader app
- Install DownloaderSearch for “Downloader” in the Fire TV or Google TV app store and install the orange app.
- Allow unknown appsOpen Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → Install unknown apps and turn Downloader on. On Android TV the switch is under Device preferences → Security.
- Enter the addressOpen Downloader, type the address of our download page and press Go. The MovieBox file starts downloading immediately.
- InstallChoose Install, wait a few seconds and press Done. Delete the APK when asked to free up space.
Tip: if you cannot find Developer options, open Settings → My Fire TV → About and press the device name seven times to unlock it.
Method 2: a USB stick
On a computer, copy the APK to a USB stick, then plug the stick into your TV box. Open a file manager such as X-plore or File Commander, browse to the stick and select the file. Android will ask you to allow the file manager to install apps; agree, then press Install.
Best settings for TV
Open MovieBox, go to Settings → Playback and set the default quality to 1080p if your connection allows it. If you see sound without a picture, switch the decoder from hardware to software. Finally, move the app to the front row of your home screen so it is always one click away.
